Comparing Some Of Your Different Custom Mask Options

The most important thing they have in common, though, is that they’re all a great way to protect others from the spread of COVID-19 when they’re worn properly.

But with all of the options out there, how do you choose what is best for you and your company?

Cloth face masks are typically described as 1-ply, 2-ply, 3-ply, etc., so let’s start there. A “ply” is a layer of material and the number of “plys” tells you how many layers of material are used in the mask. Masks that are 2-ply and 3-ply provide more protection when compared to the basic 1-ply, which are often referred to as daily wear and intended to be disposed of after wearing.  

Reusable face masks are what the CDC recommends, in part because they do not deprive healthcare workers of 3-ply surgical masks or N95 respirators. The CDC states that they are primarily meant to prevent you from infecting other people and that they may be partially protective as they may prevent you from touching your nose and mouth while you wear them. 

One primary difference is the permeability. For some, 2-ply is more comfortable while for others, 3-ply is the preference. Both reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Not only are they both washable and reusable but some are made with antimicrobial material, which helps to reduce bacteria growth and bad odors.  

Ultimately, it comes down to the masks’ intended use – will they be worn in close quarters as a sort of “final line” of defense?
