According to Inc.: A former Division 1 college football player, Kevin Plank famously bootstrapped Under Armour’s launch in 1995 armed with one simple insight: The cotton undershirts football players wore under their pads slowed them down when they became soaked with sweat.

So to make the fabric work harder for athletes, Plank created a lightweight moisture wicking fabric and, just as he was about to go broke, sold an order to Georgia Tech. The rest is history. Now, the standard for athletic apparel  is exactly the material that Plank created.
