What is USB-C and Is It Really Better?

We are big technology geeks so we love playing with new gadgets. But there is one thing all these gadgets have in common, they all need charging! While wireless charging continues to be a big trend, just about every device will have to be plugged in at some point, whether for charging or for transferring data. This begs the question: what is the best charging connector and cable? It appears the winner is USB-C.

What is USB-C?

When we say USB-C we are talking about the port where your electronics plug into something. Think of all the input and output slots on your computer or on the back of your TV. These slots come in all different shapes and sizes which create a need for all sorts of adapters. And let’s be honest, needing an adapter stinks.

Thankfully, USB-C (type C) has quickly emerged as the standard for charging and transferring data. Type C ports and connectors are included from everything to laptops to phones to tablets. Even Apple is ditching its Lightning port in favor of USB-C.

Any time Apple makes a shift to their hardware its a BIG deal. Thankfully, this move will make it easier for you to swap connectors between your non-Apple devices eliminating the need for another adaptor. I’m sure we can speak for all you Apple lovers out there when we say, “THANK YOU!”

Is It Really Better?

Now that we know what type C ports and connectors are…so what? Are they any better? The short answer is YES! First of all, the type C is about 1/3 the height and 1/2 the width of the standard USB port. Even better, it’s reversible. Type A connectors only plug in one way, while type C can plug in either way.

But the real benefit to USB-C is that it’s fast and powerful. The ports can transfer data up to 10 gigabits per second and can provide up to 100 watts of power, enough to power a laptop! Smaller, faster and more powerful… it’s no wonder why USB-C has become the industry leader.
